The Plunge

Okay, I've JUST done it. I've just registered for my first half marathon. I still have a hand over my mouth and my eyes are still bugging out. I don't know whether I'm excited or freaked...maybe both. I've filled out tons of runner registrations for other people, but it was weird to see that familiar page and to fill it with my own information. It took all of 2 minutes and now I'm committed. In it for the long-haul. No turning back now. Definitely the scariest purchase I've ever made.
EEK! What have I gotten myself into?!
I guess I'll mull it over during a run :)

  1. Congratulations on taking the proverbial plunge! This was my first 1/2 last year and have also took the plunge for my first full marathon this year.

Enjoy the journey as much as the end. Happy running and train safe.

  2. Congratulations on taking the plunge! Madison was my first of two 1/2's last year and it was awesome. Remember to enjoy the journey as much as the race itself. I also have taken the plunge, making Madison my first full marathon this year.

I wish you the best of luck and look forward to reading about your progress.

  3. I also signed up for my first half. Extremely nervous, but I've decided this is a must do! I'm getting quite a bit of advice from co-workers who have run many marathons and even completed IronMan a few times. They all say "slow and steady wins the race." This will be my mantra. For now it's just being able to run 3 miles without pasing out. Good luck and keep us posted.

  4. Well? Which one did you sign up for? Green Bay?

  5. I ran the Madison half-Marathon last year--my first ever half marathon. I signed up about this time of the year actually.

The most important thing is to avoid injury. I had been running with pain on-and-off for most of the time since I started running 4 years ago. This year I signed up for the full marathon, so I got a personal trainer to help me with strength training exercises and planning my training runs. It has made a big difference so far (I started training in November but just started getting serious in the last few weeks).

My advice: do not try and run through pain. It only gets worse. Better to cut back your training and get 100% recovered. There was no better feeling in the world than running those 10 mile training runs around the lakeshore and arboretum--and then of course the actual half marathon itself.
