Shamrock Shuffle Sunday!

It was awesome! I had so much...fun!? Really seems weird, but I did! Everyone was out in all their green glory and it was great to feel the excitement as we all gathered on State Street. The weather was wonderful - about 40-ish degrees and sunny. I did stick out my pouty lip a bit when the 10K was called to the start line, but in the end I'm glad I switched to the 5K. I even saw some of my Madison Marathon peeps working on the course.
I am pretty proud of myself for maintaining a steady pace throughout despite the monster that is Observatory Hill, which we all did twice. My legs held out pretty well and I didn't slow to a walk even once. I had been nervous all weekend that I'd end up having to walk the whole thing because of my shin splints, but they hardly bothered me. The best part was that, after crossing the finish line, I felt like I could have kept on going! 10K in April, people! It's gonna happen.

  2. Congratulations Jody! It sounds like such fun. You'll have to get rid of the shin splints though. I'd suggest an evaluation at a running shoe store where they'll put you on a treadmill and evaluate your gait. Often switching shoes will remedy the shin splint problem.

  3. Hi Judy! I have been following your blog lately and I just wanted to say that I am very proud of you and I wish you the best of luck in the rest of your training! My now husband proposed to me at the end of my first Madison Half Marathon and we have been doing the Half as a tradition each year! Maybe someday we'll move to the full...
I also ran the Shamrock Shuffle it was a lot of fun, I went for the 10k and realize I still have quite a bit more training to do if I want to hit my time for the half marathon!
I am sure you will do GREAT on your 10k in April!
I wanted to comment on the "Shin splints dilemma" I also experience that quite often, but for me I noticed it happens mostly when I go out a faster than expected so a good way for me to get rid of them while I am running is to slow down my pace, after I feel more comfortable I can speed up again but by then they are good to go! Just some food for thought!
Good Luck with all your races!

  5. I definitely thought we only have to do ONE of those Observatory Hills. Man was I in for a surprise when we had to do it again in the last mile of the 10K. I love your blog, keep it up and good luck in your next race :-)

  6. Are your shin splints gone? Did you get new shoes? I think I have them now!
